Oysters and other pearl makers

Many bivalves are able to produce pearls, as in the case of mussels right through to giant tropical-sea clam shells. However, it is rare to find shellfish capable of making truly beautiful pearls. This is the case of oysters called "pearl" or also "nacre" (or mother-of-pearl) oysters.

There are many varieties of pearl oysters.
